Some stories from a few of George's current students (champions!)
Louise K. Terry - 20-time Ladies World Skeet Champion & 25+ years NSSA All-American.
Louise Kolar Terry
"As a former NYS shooter for many years before moving to Zone 4 in 1985, I have known and shot with George for many years. In fact, my husband, Bill, and I were members at Rochester-Brooks and shot with George and Andrea on the winning NYS 5-man team for several years back in the 80s. Every shooter over time goes through peaks and valleys in their shooting career. I have been no exception. I have relied on George's help a number of times during my career to get my game back on track. I really love his methods and his emphasis on the fundamentals. When I find things aren't going well with my game - for whatever reason....sometimes it is just outside distractions - I try to remember his advice: ‘just go back to the basics!’ It is amazing how that can bring things back into focus for you!
As an experienced shooter, time spent with George in a one-on-one clinic is time VERY well spent. He analyzes your game and gives you tips and suggestions to improve, without a total overhaul of your style....he will work with you to improve what works best for you. From his perspective as a World Skeet Champion and Doubles World Record holder for many years, working with him to improve your Doubles game is a significant step.
With new students, for example., at the Ladies Charity Skeet Classic in Memphis, George has demonstrated his ability to connect to brand new shooters and, in a matter of a few hours, impart to them the confidence and basic knowledge to have fun and feel comfortable on the shooting field. In my opinion, there is nobody better at teaching the basics of skeet shooting! In the years he attended the Memphis Ladies event as a Coach for the Kreighoff Novice Event, he coached his team of Novices to a first place finish every year!"

Victoria Ferchaw - 2017 Ladies & Class World 12 Ga. Skeet Champion
Victoria Ferchaw
In 2017, on her first trip to the NSSA World Skeet Championships as a shooter, Victoria won the Ladies 12-gauge title and her class championship for the 12-gauge. I shot a 149x150 in the 12-gauge and ended up in a shoot -off on the stadium field for Ladies Champion. This was the biggest shoot off I had ever been in, so I knew I had to make it count. When I won the shoot-off, I turned around and all I saw was my dad running down to me! My dad and I are the best of friends, we shoot together, hunt together and work together.
It was also very special to have George Lehr and Todd Bender there to congratulate me on my first World Championship.
One of the most important skills of the mental game I have received was from my coach, George Lehr. He taught me not to focus so much on the score, just to shoot like I know how to shoot. I was so fixated on breaking 100s that I in turn, hurt my average. I would get so mad at myself when I would miss targets, and I would talk myself out of a good score. He put things into perspective when he told me if I miss a target, it is done and over with an I can't change it, so forget about it and crush the option.

Les Turner
Les started coaching with George in 2009, when he came to the New York State Championships and US Open at Rochester-Brooks Gun Club. Les worked on his recommended improvements over the winter in Nova Scotia, and returned to Rochester when the weather improved the spring of 2010.
After two days of work, Les went back to the Target Dust Classic at the Charlottetown Trap & Skeet and blew the doors off the scoreboard! Shooting a fabulous 399x400, including his first 100x100 with the 410, Les won HOA! And his 497x500 in HAA was an excellent score too, shooting 98x100 in Doubles. A few weeks later, Les ran his first 100-straight in Doubles!

First 100x100 in Doubles
Dan Berry
“It was a great thrill to go 100 straight in doubles. The time spent with you the last couple years were enjoyable and have helped me up the learning curve much faster than I could have done by myself. I can’t thank you enough.” – Dan Berry, Jamestown, NY
Dan started shooting registered skeet in 2007 and has been steadily progressing since – it was great to be at Victor Gun Club and see Dan break his first 100 in doubles, win the event, and go on to win the 2-gun HOA with 198x200 – congratulations Dan, what a way to start off skeet year 2010!
NY State 28-Ga Champion 2009
John Scales
John returned to registered shooting in 2006 after 20 years of raising his family, and quickly found a good squad to shoot with, seen at left – from left to right, George Lehr, Craig Parsons, referee Scotty Mitchell, John and Scott Sobiegray – while John has certainly enjoyed some excellent scores including a 99 in the 410 at the 2008 NY State Shoot, the high point so far is winning the 28-Gauge Championship at the New York State Skeet Championships in 2009.
Scott Sobiegray
Scott started shooting in 2005, and started coaching with George soon thereafter. Scott came to his first NY State Championships in 2006, where he ran 198x200 in B-class, winning B-2 and JR RU. In 2007 Scott ran 200x200 in the 12-gauge at the SCTP NYS championships at Conesus Gun Club, and shot on the runner-up squad at the SCTP Nationals in San Antonio that year (with Alik Miller and Kevin Corser, Jr.).
In 2008 Scott won the HOA championship at the Tonawanda Sportsmen’s Club and turned in an impressive performance at the NYS Skeet Championships where he ran 200x200 in the 12-gauge and won his first NY State Title, 20-gauge Champion. Scott shot a total of 8 perfect scores in 2008!
Linda Hicks
After working with George for a few hours at the Ladies Charity Classic, at the Missoula Gun Club in Montana, in July 2008, Linda (shooting in B-class) broke 98x100 to tie the highest score in the shoot, and won Open RU. LY CH and SR 3rd. Linda also won LY RU titles in the 12, 20, 28 and 410 and took LY HOA CH.
"So, I wanted to say “THANK YOU” to George. I really do believe that (when we were working on my shooting in Memphis) when he told me about the things
I was doing wrong, that really opened my eyes and gave me something to work on. Now I am getting better because I am working on what he told me to.
And please tell him how grateful I am. I could not have done this without his help and instruction."
- Linda Hicks, Utah
Update: After a couple of years working through some equipment changes, including a new Precision-Fit stock, Linda roared back to the championship podium with an outstanding 99 in the 28-Gauge at the 2010 US Open in Phoenix, AZ – Congratulations to Linda on winning LY RU at this prestigious competition! We are all hoping Mr. Mugsy makes the cover of the SSR!
Larry Bonavita
Larry started coaching with George in 2008, and ran his first 100 shortly thereafter. While the first is still worth the thrill Larry’s “didn’t count” as it came in the second half of the 200-target 12-gauge at the NY State Championships, but Larry’s second perfect score, in the 28-gauge at the Hartford Gun Club’s Manchester Open more than made up as it won him the gun championship!
Dave Wilke
Dave is a AA shooter who has said numerous times that he “wants to come up to Rochester for coaching.” We hear that a lot! However, it took what can only be called a “beginner’s score” in the 410 to finally motivate a lesson this summer. After his session, Dave came to the Zone I Championships where he placed in his class in 3 guns plus HOA, and just to make sure came back to the NY State Championships and did the same thing again, class wins in 3 guns and HOA. Dave says to George, “you’re the one!”
